The Oculus VR headset and medical goggles will be the next big item on the virtual reality shopping list for consumers
A pair of goggles and a headset that lets you watch a virtual reality video could soon become a household item.
Oculus announced Wednesday that it plans to start selling medical goggles and the Oculus Rift headset, a high-end computer game system that can run a computer program in a virtual environment.
Overnight, the company’s stock price rose nearly 2 percent.
Odyssey VR, founded by two former Apple employees and co-founded by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, is selling a headset and goggles that run a program that can be played in a video game.
The company has already begun selling the headset and headsets, but it hasn’t yet made it available for purchase.
Overtaking Apple for virtual reality is “one of the most exciting opportunities to date,” said David Jaffe, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.
Ovyssey has been focused on making virtual reality accessible to consumers, and its products offer the promise of making VR “a mainstream product,” Jaffe said.
Oculus says its new product will be sold through its online store and retail stores.
Overseas sales of Oculus products are expected to be more modest than the global sales of the headsets, which are available on the Oculus website and in Apple stores, according to industry research firm IHS Markit.
Overestimating the number of people using Oculus devices would be “a mistake,” Jaff said.
Ovr is aiming to be a global leader in VR by 2020, and it will continue to make headsets for other headsets, such as the Oculus Touch controllers, as well as a new mobile headset called the Rift, which is expected to launch this fall.
Oculus hopes that the Rift will become the standard headset for people who want to move more comfortably from virtual reality to reality.
